Brands we inspect

Used car inspection by brand — same SMGLR standard, brand-aware checks.

Different brands hide different risks. We do not pretend every car is the same. Pick the brand below and see what we focus on before you book.

Can’t see your brand?

Message us anyway. We inspect most petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV vehicles within 40km of Melbourne CBD, including Japanese, Korean, European, Australian, Chinese and electric cars.

Toyota Reliable, but watch for tired hybrid batteries, oil burning on older engines and odometer wind-backs on ex-fleet cars.

Toyota is popular for a reason, but condition still matters. A good one can be a safe buy; a neglected one can still cost real money.

  • Hybrid system data where available
  • Oil leaks and cooling system condition
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre wear
  • Service history consistency
  • Body repairs, paint depth and previous accident signs
Book a Toyota inspection
Mazda Great daily drivers — but check for rust in older models, worn front suspension and infotainment faults.

Mazdas are clean daily drivers when looked after. We focus on the stuff buyers usually miss in a quick test drive.

  • Engine bay leaks and cooling system condition
  • Transmission behaviour on road test
  • Suspension knocks, bush wear and brake condition
  • Paint, panel gaps and previous repair evidence
  • Interior electronics, infotainment and air conditioning
Book a Mazda inspection
Kia Good value with long warranties — but only if serviced on time and stamped. Unstamped books can void remaining cover.

Kia can be a strong used-car choice, especially with good service history. We check the condition properly before you rely on the badge or warranty talk.

  • Service history and warranty-related notes
  • Engine and transmission operation
  • Diagnostic scan of accessible modules
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre condition
  • Paint depth, accident signs and exterior condition
Book a Kia inspection
Hyundai Strong value buys — but watch for engine oil consumption, worn CVTs and warranty gaps from skipped services.

Hyundai buyers often look for value. Our inspection checks whether the value is real or whether the car is hiding expensive issues.

  • Engine bay condition and leaks
  • Transmission shift quality
  • Cooling system, battery and charging checks
  • Diagnostic scan data where available
  • Body condition, paint readings and previous repair signs
Book a Hyundai inspection
Honda Built to last — but check CVT behaviour, aircon compressor health and signs of prior accident repairs.

Honda builds solid cars, but age, poor servicing and accident repairs still change the whole deal.

  • Engine leaks, mounts and cooling system condition
  • Transmission behaviour and road-test feel
  • Suspension, brakes and steering checks
  • Interior electronics and A/C operation
  • Paint depth and panel repair evidence
Book a Honda inspection
Nissan CVT transmissions are the big risk — juddering or whining means expensive. Navaras can hide hard tradie use.

With Nissan, the right inspection is about separating a clean family car or ute from one that has been worked hard.

  • Transmission behaviour during road test
  • Engine leaks, cooling and visible wear
  • 4WD/ute condition where applicable
  • Suspension, underbody and tyre wear
  • Diagnostic scan and warning-light checks
Book a Nissan inspection
Mitsubishi Utes and SUVs often live hard lives — check for tow/underbody wear, tired suspension and patchy service history.

Mitsubishi utes and SUVs are common in Melbourne, but many have lived hard lives. We check beyond the clean photos.

  • Underbody condition where visible
  • 4WD, suspension and tyre wear signs
  • Engine bay leaks and cooling system condition
  • Diagnostic scan of accessible modules
  • Body repairs, tray/tow wear and previous impact signs
Book a Mitsubishi inspection
Subaru AWD is great until neglected — mismatched tyres and skipped servicing wreck drivelines. WRXs may be thrashed.

Subaru buyers usually care about safety and all-wheel drive. We check whether the car has been maintained properly, not just washed nicely.

  • Engine leaks and cooling system condition
  • AWD-related noises and driveline behaviour
  • Suspension, bushes and tyre wear
  • Road test for vibration, steering feel and braking
  • Diagnostic scan and warning-light checks
Book a Subaru inspection
Volkswagen Lovely to drive — but DSG gearboxes and timing components get costly if maintenance was skipped.

Volkswagens can drive beautifully, but skipped maintenance can turn them expensive fast. We look for the warning signs early.

  • Transmission behaviour and service history clues
  • Engine leaks, cooling and turbo-related signs where visible
  • Diagnostic scan and stored faults
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre condition
  • Interior electronics and A/C operation
Book a Volkswagen inspection
Audi Premium feel, premium repair bills — watch oil consumption, worn suspension and pricey electronic faults.

Audi buyers need more than a quick look. Luxury features, performance parts and repairs can change the real cost of ownership.

  • Diagnostic scan of accessible systems
  • Oil/coolant leaks and engine bay condition
  • Transmission behaviour and road-test feel
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre wear
  • Paint depth, panel repairs and previous accident signs

BMW Brilliant when maintained — but oil leaks, cooling failures and deferred servicing turn cheap ones expensive.

A used BMW can be brilliant, but only if the condition stacks up. We check the car like a buyer, not like a seller trying to close a deal.

  • Oil leaks, cooling system and visible engine condition
  • Transmission behaviour and road-test feel
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre wear
  • Diagnostic scan and warning-light history where available
  • Paint depth, previous repair signs and underbody condition where visible

Mercedes-Benz Luxury features mean luxury repair costs — air suspension, electronics and leaks are the ones to catch early.

Mercedes-Benz cars look premium, but repairs can be premium too. We inspect the condition before the badge sells you the dream.

  • Diagnostic scan of accessible modules
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre wear
  • Engine bay leaks and cooling system condition
  • Interior electronics, A/C and comfort features
  • Paint depth, panel gaps and accident repair signs

BYD New to Australia — check battery health data, software/charging behaviour and parts/servicing availability before buying.

BYD is growing fast in Australia, especially with EV buyers. We focus on battery-related information where available, charging behaviour, software warnings, tyres, brakes, suspension and body repair signs.

  • Battery and charging information where available
  • Tyre wear, suspension noise and brake condition
  • Screen, software alerts and interior electronics
  • Panel gaps, paint depth and previous repair evidence
  • Road test feel, noises and general EV condition
Book a BYD inspection
Geely Newer brand here — verify battery/EV data, warranty terms and how easy parts and servicing will be down the track.

Geely is newer to many Australian buyers, so a proper independent check matters. We focus on the fundamentals: diagnostic data where available, EV/hybrid systems where relevant, body condition, tyres, brakes, suspension and overall buyer risk.

  • Diagnostic scan of accessible modules
  • EV/hybrid system information where available
  • Tyres, brakes, suspension and road-test feel
  • Interior electronics, screen functions and warning messages
  • Paint depth, panel gaps and previous repair signs

Tesla Check battery health and range, panel-gap and paint quality, plus any salvage/repair history — common on cheaper listings.

Tesla inspections are different. We focus on battery/EV-related information where available, software warnings, tyre wear, accident repair signs and overall condition.

  • Battery and charging information where available
  • Tyre wear, suspension noise and brake condition
  • Screen, software alerts and interior electronics
  • Panel gaps, paint depth and previous repair evidence
  • Road test feel, noises and general condition

Ford Rangers can hide hard tradie/tow use — check driveline, clutch and underbody. Older Focus DPS6 autos are a known weak point.

Ford utes and performance cars can hide hard use. We check for wear, modifications and the kind of issues photos do not show.

  • Engine bay leaks and cooling system condition
  • Transmission and driveline behaviour
  • Underbody and suspension condition where visible
  • Tow/ute use, tyres and brakes
  • Diagnostic scan and modification signs

Holden Commodore, Colorado, Captiva, Astra and Cruze

Holden condition varies massively now. A clean-looking car still needs proper checks before you hand over money.

  • Engine leaks, cooling and visible wear
  • Transmission behaviour on road test
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre condition
  • Diagnostic scan and warning-light checks
  • Body repairs, paint depth and previous accident signs

Lexus IS, ES, GS, NX, RX and hybrid models

Lexus is often a strong used buy, but premium cars still need premium checks — especially hybrids and higher-km examples.

  • Hybrid data where available
  • Engine bay, cooling and leak checks
  • Suspension, brakes and tyre wear
  • Interior electronics and luxury features
  • Paint depth and previous repair evidence

The SMGLR promise — save or it's free

If our negotiation doesn't save more than our fee, the eligible service fee is waived.

We compare the advertised asking price with the final agreed purchase price after our negotiation. If the saving is less than or equal to our eligible service fee, that fee is waived.

Applies to SMGLR Companion and SMGLR Companion 2.0.

Save-or-it's-free promise — the terms+
  1. The promise applies to SMGLR Companion and SMGLR Companion 2.0 only.
  2. "Saving" means the difference between the seller's advertised asking price at the time of booking and the final purchase price agreed after our negotiation.
  3. If you purchase the vehicle and that saving is less than or equal to the fee of the eligible service, the fee is waived in full.
  4. The promise applies where SMGLR conducts or directly supports the negotiation. It doesn't apply if you negotiate separately, decline our negotiation support, or choose not to purchase the vehicle.
  5. A walk-away verdict isn't a failed negotiation — it's the service doing its job: protecting you from a bad purchase. Standard fees apply.

What we inspect

A buyer-focused inspection system — not a copied checklist.

This section is built around SMGLR’s own process: risk, evidence and a final buyer verdict. Customers can open each area to understand what gets checked, why it matters, and how it can protect them before they buy.

Road test

SMGLR approach: we don’t just list random parts. We group the inspection into practical buyer-risk zones: structure, mechanical health, scan data, road feel, ownership clues and negotiation points.

01

Body, paint & accident clues

We look for signs the vehicle has been repaired, resprayed, hit, neglected or poorly presented.

+
  • Paint thickness readings across accessible panels
  • Panel gaps, alignment, overspray and repair clues
  • Dents, scratches, chips, rust and exterior damage
  • Lights, mirrors, glass, trims and visible body condition
02

Engine bay & visible mechanical health

We check for obvious mechanical warning signs that can turn a cheap car into an expensive one.

+
  • Visible oil, coolant and fluid leaks
  • Hoses, belts, mounts and accessible wear items
  • Cooling system condition and fluid concerns where visible
  • Unusual smells, noises or signs of poor maintenance
03

Tyres, brakes, suspension & underbody visibility

We assess safety-related wear and visible underbody issues without pretending a mobile check is a hoist strip-down.

+
  • Tyre tread, sidewall damage, age signs and uneven wear
  • Wheel damage and brake condition where visible
  • Suspension noise, visible bush wear and steering concerns
  • Underbody leaks or impact damage where safely accessible
  • Undertrays/covers are not removed during standard mobile inspections
04

Interior, features & daily-use checks

We test the features buyers actually use after purchase — not just whether the car starts.

+
  • Dashboard warning lights and obvious display concerns
  • Windows, locks, mirrors, seats and key functions
  • Air conditioning, heater and cabin controls
  • Interior wear, trim condition and signs of rough use
05

Diagnostic scan, battery & EV/hybrid awareness

Tool-based checks add evidence. We scan what the vehicle allows and explain the results in plain English.

+
  • Diagnostic scan for accessible active and stored fault codes
  • Battery condition and charging-system check where applicable
  • Hybrid/EV information where accessible and relevant
  • Clear explanation of scan results and limitations
06

Road test, report & negotiation points

The final value is the verdict: buy, negotiate or walk away — backed by the evidence we found.

+
  • Road test where safe, legal and permitted by the seller
  • Steering, braking, transmission feel, noises and vibration checks
  • Photos and notes of important findings
  • Negotiation points you can use before committing
  • Final buyer direction: buy, negotiate further or avoid

Important: this is intentionally our own structure. We are not copying another inspector’s icons, wording or layout. The goal is to look premium, transparent and original while still giving customers the same confidence: they can see what they’re paying for before they book.

Common questions
Is the listing verdict really free?

Yes. Send us the link first and we'll tell you honestly whether the car looks worth pursuing — no charge, no obligation, no strings.

Who actually inspects the car?

A qualified, dealership-trained and EV-qualified mechanic carries out the inspection and prepares your buyer-side verdict.

Does the promise apply to every service?

It applies to SMGLR Companion and SMGLR Companion 2.0 — the services where negotiation support is included. If our negotiation does not save more than the eligible service fee, that fee is waived — save or it's free.

What's a pre-finance inspection?

Some lenders want an independent condition check on a used car before approving the loan. We inspect the vehicle and provide a written condition summary you can pass to your bank or finance company. Lenders can also request the report directly at smglrautochecks@gmail.com.

Do you offer student or pensioner discounts?

Yes — $50 off any inspection service priced $199 or above, with a valid student or pensioner card. Mention it when booking.

Do you include photos and video?

Yes. We photograph all findings and include a walkaround video of the interior and exterior with your written report — so you can see the evidence for yourself, not just read a vague note. This is especially useful if you can't see the car in person.

Do you road test the car?

Yes, wherever it's safe, legal and permitted by the seller or dealer.

How do I book?

Fill in the quick booking form, or send the listing through WhatsApp, SMS or email. We confirm the service, location and a suitable inspection time — then a real mechanic calls you afterwards to talk through every finding.

Can an inspection guarantee the car will never have problems?

No honest inspection can promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who claims otherwise. What we do is dramatically reduce your risk — and make sure the decision you make is an informed one.

Inspection terms

Buyer notes & service limits — straight, clear, professional.

An SMGLR inspection is built to reduce buying risk, expose obvious warning signs and give you a stronger decision before money changes hands. It is not a roadworthy certificate, warranty, insurance policy or full workshop strip-down.

Our position

We inspect as an independent buyer-side mechanic. We do not work for the seller, we do not dress up bad cars, and we do not over-promise. The goal is simple: show you the evidence, explain the risk and help you decide whether to buy, negotiate or walk away.

Service scope
  • SMGLR performs a mobile inspection on the vehicle nominated by the buyer before purchase, subject to safe access and seller permission.
  • The inspection may include visible mechanical condition, exterior and paint condition, interior condition, accessible underbody areas, tyres, brakes, suspension, basic electrical checks, diagnostic scan data where available, and a road test where safe and permitted.
  • The report gives a practical buyer verdict based on what was observed at the time of inspection.
  • The inspection is an independent condition assessment only. It does not replace a roadworthy certificate, manufacturer diagnosis, specialist inspection or workshop dismantling.
Mobile inspection limits
  • We do not remove undertrays, splash shields, trim panels, covers or components during a standard mobile inspection.
  • We do not jack or lift the vehicle unless a safe, suitable and agreed setup is available. Most inspections are completed from ground level and through safely accessible areas.
  • Factory undercovers, low ride height, poor lighting, wet weather, locked areas, seller restrictions or unsafe locations may limit what can be seen.
  • Where useful, we may use a torch, inspection mirror or borescope to check accessible hidden areas. A borescope improves visibility but cannot see through covers, metal, sealed parts or blocked areas.
  • If the vehicle needs hoist access, compression testing, leak-down testing, specialist EV/hybrid testing or deeper workshop diagnosis, we will say so clearly.
What is not guaranteed
  • No used car inspection can guarantee a perfect vehicle or promise that future faults will not occur.
  • Intermittent faults, hidden internal damage, recently cleared warning lights, concealed accident repairs, fresh leaks, weak components or faults that do not appear during inspection may not be detectable.
  • Diagnostic scans only show accessible vehicle data at the time of scan. Not every module, fault or historical event is always available.
  • We do not guarantee engine compression, internal gearbox condition, timing belt condition, catalytic converter internals, brake lining material behind sealed areas, emissions compliance or internal component life unless a specific specialist test is separately arranged.
  • We do not verify legal title, finance owing, stolen status, written-off status, odometer legality, registration entitlement or seller ownership. Buyers should verify these through PPSR and relevant authorities before purchase.
Buyer responsibilities
  • Provide accurate vehicle details, the listing link where possible, seller contact details if you want us to arrange access, and any concerns you want checked.
  • Ensure the vehicle is available at the agreed time and that the seller allows reasonable inspection access.
  • Review the report, photos and verdict carefully before making a purchase decision.
  • Complete your own PPSR, finance, identity, registration, insurance and legal checks before paying a deposit or transferring money.
  • Understand that the final purchase decision remains with the buyer. SMGLR provides evidence, risk assessment and advice — not a purchase guarantee.
After the inspection
  • The report reflects the vehicle condition at the inspection time only.
  • SMGLR is not responsible for damage, faults, repairs, use, storage, transport, tampering or condition changes that occur after the inspection.
  • If the seller continues driving the vehicle after inspection, new issues may appear before you collect it.
  • We recommend a final buyer walkaround before payment or handover to confirm the vehicle still presents as expected.
  • If our findings raise serious concern, do not proceed until the issue is verified, repaired, priced into the deal or checked by the right specialist.
Booking, cancellation and refunds
  • Booking times depend on availability, seller access, location and daylight/safety conditions.
  • After-hours and weekend inspections are available by appointment within our service area.
  • If a seller cancels, the vehicle becomes unavailable, or access is refused, we will work with you to reschedule where practical.
  • Fees may apply where we attend a location and the vehicle is not available, safe or accessible due to incorrect details or seller refusal.
  • Refund eligibility depends on the timing, work already performed, travel already completed and the reason for cancellation.

Bottom line

We give you the clearest practical picture possible in a mobile setting. If the car needs deeper investigation, we will not guess — we will recommend the right next step.
